If you’re around the same vintage as I am (62) you probably remember Jayne Mansfield or at least heard about her.
I know you’re probably wondering what Jayne Mansfield has to do with the automobile industry but actually, she had a lot to do with it.
Jayne was a 1950’s blond bombshell that took Hollywood by storm. Before she had a chance to make it really big she was killed in a car accident.
On June 29, 1967 the car she was riding in crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer that had slowed down because of a truck spraying mosquito fogger. The automobile struck the rear of the semi tractor and under-rode it. She was killed instantly. Rumors that Mansfield was decapitated are untrue, though she did suffer severe head trauma. ly no charge.
The scene was so gruesome that it wasn’t long before the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made it mandatory that all semi truck trailers be outfitted with a rear under-ride bar or bumper.
In 1998 that standard was revised and the height that this requirement was set at was 22 inches (measured from the ground to the bottom of the bumper).
Today there are a number of pickup trucks and SUVs that you can drive off the showroom floor with bumpers higher than 22” (although they’re getting better). So why should you care?
Under-ride is a huge problem – not just for the bullet vehicle that under-rides the target vehicle but because the target vehicle is susceptible to a post collision fire….especially the Jeep Grand Cherokee (1993 – 2004) and the Jeep Liberty (2002 – 2007) because their gas tanks are located right behind the rear axle next to the bumper.
The auto industry has done a lot to prevent the typical backing accident by installing backup alarms and cameras. But did you know that you are twice as likely to die from a fire caused by a rear end collision to your pickup truck than you are to back up over someone with it.
Rear end collision fires are rare – but not a rare as backing over someone. There’s only two ways to help prevent a post collision vehicle fire – move the gas tank ahead of the rear axel or shield it from intrusion.
Blocking under-ride and shielding from intrusions into the tank zone are just two more additional benefits of having one of our products on the back of your pickup truck or SUV.

By the way, Jayne Mansfield’s daughter, Mariska Hargitay was also in the automobile crash. She came away with just a slight cut above the eye. Mariska stars in the TV series Special Victim’s Unit or SVU.

Last issue, you may recall we installed a new aftermarket fuel tank on Mike Pennington’s 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 with the 6.6L diesel. In addition, he had just installed a new large fiberglass canopy which he uses as a changing room to stay dry as he is an avid motocross and trials bike rider. The downside (isn’t there always a downside?) is that even though he has back-up sensors, he now is not able to see anything at the rear of the truck and feels a back-up camera system would give him that extra peace of mind when he’s in reverse.

A few blogs back (Things That Go Bump) we talked about the dangers to a unibody vehicle being hit from the rear while a hitch is in the hitch receiver.
The force of the crash goes through the hitch & into the unibody frame structure, doing lots more damage than would have been done if the rear bumper had been allowed to do its job: absorbing impact.
But check out the hitch being produced in Burnsville by Mohr Manufacturing. It absorbs impact with a spring. The company says their auxiliary bumper (which fits in a standard hitch receiver) can help protect the vehicle and the occupants.

Jeff Mohr did some digging after his wife’s vehicle was struck from behind in 2001.
He was surprised to learn about the huge number of vehicles that are struck from the rear. Seventy-five percent of those crashes occur at speeds of 10 miles per hour or less, yet can cause considerable injury to both a vehicle and its occupants.
Mohr figured there must be a better way to absorb the energy of such crashes and he spent five years devising and developing the SUPERBUMPER, an energy-absorbing unit that plugs into a typical trailer hitch.
Mohr notes that most people use their hitches to actually pull trailers only 1 percent of the time. SUPERBUMPER is designed to provide protection “the 99 percent of the time you’re not pulling a trailer,” Mohr says. “The concept is to use the strength of the trailer hitch to protect the back of the vehicle.”

It sounds ridiculous at first, but as a longtime owner of vehicles with higher-than-average ground clearance, one of my biggest concerns on the highway is “ride under” (where the nose of one car “submarines” under or climbs over the bumper of another in a rear end collision).

Two years ago while attending SEMA; I stumbled across an interesting item, the SuperBumper by Mohr Manufacturing.
The SuperBumper is a shock-absorbing bumper which mounts into the receiver hitch of our diesel trucks (and many other vehicles as well). Made of four inch steel tubing and having a length of 24 inches, this is a substantial piece of equipment.
The shock-absorbing mechanism is achieved when several high-density rubber “springs” are inserted around and in the shaft of the SuperBumper and inserted into the receiver hitch. The manufacture claims (Guarantees) the SuperBumper will withstand a five mile an hour direct hit without sustaining damage to itself or transferring any damage to the vehicle.
The SuperBumper also comes standard with a ball mount for towing, with a choice of mounts ranging from 1 7/8”, 2” or 2 5/16”. The towing capacity of the SuperBumper is a whooping 6,000 pounds with a 600 pound tongue weight. These units are designed to work only with a 2” receiver.

Most tow vehicles are driven around not towing anything most of the time. The receiver hitch is bare, or covered by a receiver hitch cap. Jim Mohr and his company, Mohr Manufacturing, has a much better use for the receiver hitch when not towing – the Superbumper.
Unlike cars, there are no bumper collision standards for pickups, SUVs or minivans. Incidentally, since the 1983 model year, it has been the 2.5–mph bumper standard rather than the previous 5–mph standard.

Mohr Manufacturing’s bumper shields might be the best protection one can get to protect from vehicle accidents. These bumper shields/skid plates/hitch covers will protect your truck or SUV from the two most common vehicle accidents: getting hit while parked and rear end collisions. The shield uses a dual compression system so it can be pinned out for maximum protection, or pinned further in for clearance issues. The shield should be pinned closer in for off-roading, tight garage spaces, or to avoid being detected by backup alarms. It is as simple as arranging the rubber bumpers/spacers to pin the shield in its desired location.
The bumper shield is energy-absorbing, so it won’t transfer all crash energy from a rear-end collision directly to the occupants. The shield will keep the receiver hitch from bending when hit in the rear and will also keep careless parallel parkers from hitting your bumper. After his wife’s vehicle was struck from behind, Jeff Mohr went to work and created the SUPERBUMPER, an energy-absorbing extension that could be plugged into the trailer hitch typically mounted on the back of a sport utility vehicle or pickup truck.
Mohr’s SUPERBUMPER was designed to minimize damage to a vehicle and its occupants when struck from behind. Such accidents, Mohr discovered in his research, are the most frequent of all collisions, accounting for nearly 30 percent of crashes.
Mohr Manufacturing Inc., of Burnsville, Minn., introduced its SUPERBUMPER more than a year ago. Now, Mohr is back with a new product, the SPAREBUMPER.
Unlike the SUPERBUMPER, the SPAREBUMPER does not include a place to insert a hitch ball, so you have to remove it to do any towing. But the SPAREBUMPER has the same energy-absorbing technology, which works, Mohr says, whether someone hits you from behind or when you back into a post or other object.

Ok…so check this out. Yesterday I was driving by a local high school, which happened to be getting out, and I was stopped at a light in front of it and I get rear ended by some punk high school 16 year old, but I was fine because I had one of these things on my trailer hitch- It’s called a Superbumper, well actually I have the Sparebumper, notice the rubber which absorbed all the impact from the car that hit.
A while back I was looking for a hitch step, since I probably wont ever tow anything with my TB (Trail Blazer), and I thought this thing was a good idea so I got it, LOL (Lots of Luck) thank god, the kid that hit me was fine, the thing dented his front though, and of course my car was completely fine…so yeah GET ONE! You never know. And for the guys that do a lot of towing they have a model that has a ball hitch on it.

I’ve replaced my car’s rear bumper twice after rear-end collisions that were no fault of my own, so I know how costly and arduous the process can be. You have to file insurance claims, provide cost comparisons and live without your car while it’s being repaired. That’s a lot of hassle. Fortunately, I wasn’t hurt in any of my collisions, but if you add an injury into this mix, you might wish you’d have purchased the spare bumper in the first place.

Carrot River: Cars in Canada must have a bumper capable of being hit at low speed and absorbing the energy. Trucks and vans which are classified as trucks are exempt from this requirement. Kevin has installed on his van a clever solution to improve the safety of his vehicle.
While surfing the web I came across a website called Super Bumper. I have no idea how I found it but that’s the story of the web.
A Super Bumper is a unit that slides into the 2″ receiver on a Class III receiver hitch, is 24″ wide and takes the impact if you’re rear ended of a “victim of someone parking by braille”. It is protection from those who think their all season tires and ABS will actually stop their cars when they jump on their brakes in the winter. The channel on the shank has a slot machined into it for the unit to slide on via the retaining pin and inside the shank is a series of rubber blocks. The outside of the shank has rubber doughnuts – if you’re hit, these rubber blocks / doughnuts take the force. According to their website, a one ton truck with this installed can absorb an impact of 4.4 MPH and not damage your vehicle.
The company says its bumpers, ball mounts and shields absorb nearly 12 mph of the acceleration caused by a rear-end collision. Mohr’s products will prevent vehicle damage, under-ride and personal injury (whiplash) from this type of accident. They are portable, patented and crash-tested. In addition, they can be installed by sliding into any receiver hitch.
“I was hit in the rear by a two-ton truck in the middle of midtown (Manhattan) while stuck in traffic,” said Ian Skeete, a customer from Bronx, N.Y. “I drove away with a cracked reflector instead of broken tail lights, dented tailgate, cracked bumper and maybe even a broken back window. Did you know that if you get rear ended you have a 22% higher risk of a whiplash injury with a ball mount in your receiver hitch than without one? Why? Because a vehicle equipped with a receiver hitch produces a stiffer “crash pulse” increasing acceleration to the occupants.
And even if you remove the ball mount, you still have the receiver hitch which is bolted directly to the frame. There’s just NO give.
Crash tests with ball mounts and receiver hitches produce a “stiff” pulse and will cause greater neck movement than a “soft” impact pulse in a rear end collision.
Step outside and take a look around the parking lot. You’ll probably see a dozen vehicles with their ball mounts in their receiver hitches. Some people seem to think that a ball mount will protect them in a rear end collision. Well, it may help protect the vehicle to some degree but they really need to be concerned about the occupants.
Safety Tip: Remove any fixed or static receiver hitch product when you get done using it: i.e. ball mounts, bike racks, cargo carriers and even the current “hitch steps” on the market today. All they’ll do is increase your chances of injury. And for women, they are already two times more susceptible to whiplash then a man because their necks are not as strong.
There is a safer way to tow your trailer or to make your receiver hitch safer when you get done towing. All of our products “soften the crash pulse” and that is what separates our products from all the rest – SAFETY.
Having to drive 75 mph on a 2 lane highway almost everyday definitely opens your eyes to the typical Arizona driver: drive 5 mph under the speed limit and sit in the left lane like it was a sightseeing tour. Driving slow in the left lane can cause just as much, if not, more accidents than driving faster in the right lane. My point is that you cannot trust anyone on the road. Not soccer moms, not a yuppie with a BMW, not even a priest on his way to the Vatican.
In a generation of modern technology such as the Ipod and cell phone, distractive driving is at all time high. It used to be enough to avoid the woman applying make-up while steering with her knees and going 70mph. Now you have to avoid the 17 year old texting their BFF’s (‘best friends forever’ for the texting illiterate) while they’re driving. You have to avoid the head banging punk rocker that is flipping through their IPod to see which of the latest tunes matches their current driving mood. You even have to look out for the boob tube junkie who has to have their fix of ‘General Hospital’ and is gazing at their in-dash 7” monitor. I think most parents would agree that our roads are little less safe than yester-year. Having said that, automobile technology has done a great job keeping up with the times.
The product I have had on my car for the past few weeks is called the “Super Bumper”. This is the ultimate peace of mind. It is extremely easy to attach and the latest model I have(see picture) is very sleek. All the extra distractions that I have mentioned above lead to a lot more accidents.

I also see potential for after market opportunities. The newly designed Super Bumper can also act as a marketing tool. I think it is a large enough scale to print some vinyl lettering to advertise anything you want. Whether it is your favorite sports team or, like my wife, your home-based business. I really love this product and it has taken a lot for me not to test it on an unsuspecting car that pushed my patience. Thank you, Superbumper, for that ultimate peace of mind!
